PlayStation 3 is More Like a Computer Than Everyone Thinks

by Firdaush Bhadha on Oct.18, 2008, under My Blogs

People have always bashed the 360 for being a PC inside a console. “The 360 is just a PC but with a fetch for games”. It is true the inside of the 360 there are many PC like a parts: 3 CPUs, RAM, GPU, Sound Card. But what about the PS3? The PS3 does have all those things but is slightly diffrent and may not be the revolutionary piece of hardware everyone thinks it is. Don’t get me wrong the PS3 is quite revolutionary but it is not standalone console that everyone thinks it is.

The PS3 is a very powerful machine it can do a lot of things, Scientist have even made a Super Computer using a cluster of 8 PS3’s. On one side the PS3 hardware is quite difficult to program for. The Cell Broad Band Engine is not the angel it was cracked up to be. -The PS3’s Cell Broadband Engine processor, is a multiprocessor. Instead of identical cores – like the 360 - the Cell consists of a 64bit PowerPC core and 8 “synergistic co-processor elements” only 6 can be used by developers since 1 is reserved for the OS. -I can sense most of you read that and dropping your jaw- What does this all mean, well it means that the PS3 SPE’s can each send information individually, but the processors can only do one thing at a time: Only control AI, Physics, what have you. But this means unlike the 360, 6 different tasks can be done at the same time and each task is done at great precision, so this means great level of physics, AI etc but writing all that code and calculating all those things take a lot of time for developers thats why most multi-platform games are done on the 360 then ‘ported’ over to the PS3 (Bioshock). But the 360 can can do those things but not to as accuratly but it is much easier for programmer since the 360 is like a computer; -they already know what to do and how-. Learning how to use the SPE’s is like learning a new language all over again, but once the programmers get the hang of it, we will see games that the 360 would have trouble supporting, it already is with the size of the DVD.
With the PS3 running Linux on it you can do even greater and better things. Like the Super Computer Project the PS3 is the cheapest and most cost effective Super Computer on the market.  With out Linux the Ps3 can surf the net, it can trans-code, and even do calculations (Fold @ Home). Something people may not known is that like the 360 you can have a memory card plug-in and can save your games onto a memory card. But unlike the 360 you don’t need to buy a special memory card to do it, any USB thumb drive, compatible MP3, or Mass Storage Device can be used. Even for you lazy bones out there you can go online and even download game saves. Some games like Call Of Duty 4 online you don’t even need to do that you can log on to your account at your friends house then your rank and guns will be ready to go for you since the PSN stores online things such ranks and load outs on the sever to avoid cheaters using USB thumb drives and to let you play on other consoles something the 360 can do but you need to wait for since the 360 needs to download everything from your 360 to your friends-which means its not on a sever but the sever knows what you have on your account so it can fetch your account-. The amazing thing is that once logged into your account you can share your games that you have bought. The Broswer on the Ps3 is not only a fully functional internet broswer, you can now -with the 2.50 update- watch all movies. No longer are you restricted to watching only Flash 6 -not sure what the old one was- videos you can now go on any site and watch Flash 9 videos. And say you have a nieghbour or relative with a 52″ TV with Souround Sound and the whole ten yard, you can press L3 and zoom to make the video take up the WHOLE SCREEN with no pixialating. There is also this certain insentive calle the Blu-Ray player. HD is the new wave of technology and with the Ps3 you won’t be left in the dust, infact you have a gaming console on one side, a potential pc on another, and a Blu-Ray player.
The PS3 is really a unique machine with AMAZING capabilities, with the lack proprietary in-puts and the addition of Open source, open ending experience the PS3 is more compatible with more things than any other console. With the add-on of the Blu-Ray player and frequent updates you have the most future proof piece of hardware on the market. So which system is really more like a PC? (don’t mean to sound like a sales person always end up sounding that way :P

PlayStation 3 (v2.50) update Release Date

by Firdaush Bhadha on Oct.14, 2008, under My Blogs

It has been ‘confirmed’ that the update for the PS3 is tommorow (oct 15). Here are the details:

Announcing PS3 v2.50
The next system software updates for both the PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP will be available tomorrow! Here’s a quick rundown of the great new features that we’ll be able to enjoy from 15 October 2008:

PS3 System Software version 2.50

  • Improved Official Bluetooth Headset wireless headset support, including an on-screen indicator that shows volume, battery charge, and mute functions.
  • Bluetooth Headset  Wireless headset High Quality (HQ) mode, which utilises advanced wireless technologies and the headset’s dual-microphone design to enable clear and wide-band wireless voice communication with PS3 system.
  • An in-game screenshot capture tool – titles that support the feature will be announced in the future.
  • PS3 Trophies user interface enhancement – When players acquire a Trophy, the in-game notification will now include the specific Trophy icon created by the developer, while more intuitive options for comparing Trophies with friends have been added, including an icon to represent each Trophy level.
  • Video – Video scene search functionality will provide thumbnails to help you find a particular scene in a video more easily.
  • Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.
  • Power save – PS3 owners will have the option to automatically shut-off their console or controllers after pre-selected periods of inactivity.
  • Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser.

I THINK HOME is going to be released with it, no word on that yet, although with the video they released they didn’t mention anything, but some official sites did mention HOME will be released with 2.50, as did I. We will just have to wait and see. The update is diffinatly going to be sometime this week, if not tommorow due to the fact that PSN is down and so are the severs “Severs are down for Maintainence”. So if my facts are right, hope you all enjoy the update I will write a overview of it tommorow.

Not much to say about the song. Only thing is i went to a slightly slower pace. The song was done over the thanksgiving weekend, so I tried to give it a relaxing feeling with a little party aspect to it.  Hope you all enjoy it.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Who Needs Windows When You Have Google

by Firdaush Bhadha on Oct.08, 2008, under My Blogs

As a blogger with bad grammar and spelling, I have learned that Google comes in pretty handy. When I don’t know how to spell something I type into google click on images and check if that matches what I wanted if it doesn’t then I would spell it a different way. Usually I used to use Word to write my post, but since then and after 30,000 words I have finally evolved passed grade 2 spelling, with the help of my friends of course. But checking my spelling and with google then coping and pasting grew pretty tiresome. Then after around my 10 blog I realized that Google had a Word type feature called Google Docs. I thought it would be some lame Notepad type deal but it just so happens that this -in some ways- is much better then word. No auto-detection of i’s or auto capitalize the first word of a sentence but -I know this may sound sketchy- it does help me in the long run anyway. But with Google Docs the ENTIRE DICTIONARY is at my finger tips. Don’t know how to spell something press look up word and Google chrome will automatically open a new tab and search while I continue my blog. Also Google Docs may have a primitive  spelling detection but that forces me to figure out the spelling my self -or because I am to lazy to do a search :P , (baby steps)-. In every students life there has been a moment of “O shit my Power Point doesn’t work” or “SHIT!!!! I used a .docx instead of a .doc file type now my crappy computer at school won’t know how to read it.”. Well with Google Docs you have a PDF option, Presentation option, Document, Spread Sheet, the list goes on. So if you ever find your self in this situation your search for the ultimate cure is finally here. Google Docs is still in Beta so there may be a few minor issues like the spelling detection and other things. But now you don’t have to go out and Buy that $100 suite, that you know will screw you in the end.

Google Docs with its online function works like a dream. Forgetting your project or screwing up your presentation is a thing of the past. But what if a scenario comes up that you don’t have Internet. Google Docs got your back in that department too. You can work offline as well, you will need to download Google gear but it opens up so many possibilities and cuts down on many issues which may come up with Word. Say your Internet goes out, Google Docs will continue to save your work on your COMPUTER, and when your Internet comes back Google Docs will update your online copy. Or say you have a laptop and you need to catch a bus just get on the bus and continue typing, when you return home again go on Google Docs and then Google Gears will update your document, presentation, etc, automatically. If I want to check something in word, I can’t even download a blog in word format, Open Office, PDF, RTF, Text, and HTML. If you are a business man and you want to present a Presentation, you can invite people to view your Presentation over a computer. Some one can be in China, while the other is showing them the business plan in the U.S.A.

I would recommend using Google Docs to anyone the only down side is that you need a Google account -but who doesn’t have one of those :P -. (plus using Gmail looks more pro on a resume, since I bet your Hotmail account has numbers and 3 for E and 8 for ATE and what not. Just don’t do that again with your Gmail account.)

Hope this has given you and insight on my new discovery, I would probably delete the Word suite if this wasn’t my dads computer and that I don’t completely trust Google docs yet, I still keep a copy of blogs in word. Not to mention the spelling-detection ‘GOOGLE’ Docs doesn’t recognize google, and Gmail so how can I trust there product….(sorry for sounding like a sales rep :P )
